City of Show Low is Hiring a Senior Planner Near Show Low, AZ

The City of Show Low will be hiring one candidate to fill the Planner/Senior Planner position. Please apply for the position you feel most qualified for.
Under general direction from the Planning and Zoning Director, performs administrative and supervisory professional work of considerable difficulty. Responsible for and assists in coordinating the preparation of support policies, programs and ordinances. Conducts and coordinates the completion of staff reports to the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council and is involved in the implementation of development service activities. Serves as acting division director in the Director’s absence.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general guidance and direction of the Planning and Zoning Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Exercises supervision over code enforcement, other planners and other support staff through liaison role with the Planning and Zoning Director.Reports to and works together with the Planning and Zoning Director in the development of short- and long-range plans, ordinance amendments and developments service plan review and project implementation capacities. Assists the Planning and Zoning Director in organizing department workloads and evaluating department staff.
 
Provides professional assistance to the Planning and Zoning Director in the evaluation of zoning and land use development proposals, subdivision plats and annexations to ensure compliance with all local and applicable state and federal laws and evaluate the projects’ compatibility with the City’s General Plan and neighboring properties.
 
Makes presentations to supervisors, City Council, Planning and Zoning Commission, civic groups and the general public.
 
Exercises considerable initiative and judgement in the completion of assignments including preparation of staff reports, interaction with community interest groups, coordinating inter-departmental projects/activities and preparation of special projects/reports.
 
Provides professional planning and development advice to representatives of the development community.
 
May assist in state and federal grant programs as assigned by the Planning and Zoning Director.
 
Oversees the formulation of technical research studies and assists in revising local legislation and plans, monitors, and collects local and regional socio-economic data.
 
Communicates official plans, programs, policies and procedures to staff and the general public.
 
Resolves complex and sensitive customer service issues either personally, by telephone or in writing.
 
Oversees the operations, agendas, and correspondence of the Planning and Zoning Commission.
 
Oversees zoning code and property maintenance code and enforcement activities.
 
 
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Serves as a member of various staff committees as assigned.
 
Attends professional development workshops and conferences to keep abreast of trends and developments in the field of municipal planning.Education and Experience:
  1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in land-use planning, urban planning, landscape architecture, public administration, or a closely related field. Master’s degree preferred in Urban and Regional Planning
  2. Minimum 4 years’ experience in Planning or closely related field.
  3. AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners) certification preferred.
 
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Considerable knowledge of zoning laws and comprehensive plans including their formation, process of adoption and enforcement. Considerable knowledge of planning programs and processes. Working knowledge of Personal Computer and Geographic Information Systems.
  2. Skill in the operation of the listed tools and equipment.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with architects, contractors, developers, owners, supervisors, employees, and the general public. Ability to establish effective working relationships.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid state driver license or the ability to obtain one. 
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Personal computer, including word processing, motor vehicle, calculator, phone, copy and fax machines and various graphic design tools.
